Anonymous asked: Good, experienced PAs can be mini-ADs and take a load off, but they're rarely paid even minimum wage much less OT on low budget shows. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for. And paying your PAs industry standards, incl. OT, is still cheaper than bringing on additional AD staff. Something to think about.
Add up all the overtime productions pay, and you’d have an additional 2nd AD, or Additional 2nd 2nd on almost every day of the shoot. There’s a reason why Key 2nd AD exists. It denotes the fact that there are additional AD staff under you.
Now yes there’s the argument of expense, but look, most of your low budget $5-$10 mil indies aren’t paying you that fucking much in the first place. So when they cry poverty, but the 5th electric on the callsheet during a daylight EXT in a field, didn’t make a whole lot of sense either. And he’s making more than most 2nd 2nds after 12 hours.
So yes, I could essentially hire a PA for minimum wage, with AD experience and hope they want to do the job for that rate, but 9/10, the answer is F-you.
Personally, I’d just settle for a competent base camp PA.
